volunteering at new beginnings peer support

Discover the various opportunities we offer for peer volunteers and community volunteers 16 years and over.

Interested in volunteering?

Volunteers are the heart of New Beginnings Peer Support; we wouldn’t reach the number of clients or deliver as diverse a service without their support.

Our volunteer roles vary from one-to-one client support or group walks to organising events or delivering donations such as clothing, toys, and household items.

We have positions available for both peer volunteers, community volunteers and students 16yrs+ (See below details of the Power of 10 project). Basic descriptions of roles can be found to the right. For further details of any roles, to discuss corporate volunteer days or to discuss a skillset you wish to offer that does not fit into an existing role description, you can contact kelly@newbeginningspeersupport.com.

Our volunteers provide us with the most valuable commodity, their time. In return, we strive to match their skillset and/or their volunteering objectives to the role to ensure fulfilment during their time with New Beginnings Peer Support. Aiming to provide volunteers a place where they can utilise existing skills alongside developing and building upon new skills, with opportunities to help them work towards personal or professional goals.

  • Delivered both online and in-person (Harrogate) Own My Life course volunteers support our facilitators before, during and after the 2hr sessions.

With each each cohort ranging from 8-12 participants and compiled of 12 sessions. It requires a weekly commitment of up to 6hrs spread across two days.

The minimum commitment for this role is one full cohort and is particularly well suited to peer volunteers who have previously completed the course themselves or to those looking for experience supporting women in a safe and structured environment.

  • Fundraising activities are a vital source of funding for New Beginnings Peer Support enabling us to remain flexible and responsive to our client's needs.

As such we have a cohort of fundraising volunteers who support us in arranging events, sourcing funding opportunities and promoting cost-free fundraising to the wider public.

If you are an ideas person that loves networking and are happy speaking up this role is for you!

  • Our groups run due to committed volunteers including those who have progressed through the client to volunteer pathway.

This is a client facing role that requires a flexible outlook as you go between making a cuppa and ensuring client activities are well sourced to being confident in tackling challenging conversations and relevant signposting.

  • As a small charity with an even smaller office we have no storage for donations and require often weekly donation drop-offs from Harrogate to Boroughbridge or Skipton to Bentham.

If you love to drive this role is for you. (Mileage expenses can be requested monthly).

  • This is a new service to New Beginnings Peer Support and one that is vital in empowering our clients at a pace that suits them.

It is a very varied role as each clients needs are different. If you thrive when every day is different and are happy accompanying clients to appointments, meeting them for coffee or completing a home visit and putting a load of washing on this role is for you.

  • While we hope for our clients to reach out when they are struggling, due to trauma responses this is often not possible.

As such we are now developing a text check-in service where, at pre-agreed times, volunteers can reach out to clients to have a relaxed catch up or when necessary signpost them to specialist support either internally or externally.

As a direct to client role this requires someone who is naturally empathetic and looks to empower women to be their best self.

  • Outreach is vital to raising awareness amongst the wider community.

If you love talking to people and making new connections perhaps holding a stall in the community or attending a freshers fair is for you.

  • Social media is a great way to raise awareness, share knowledge and promote what the New Beginnings Peer Support Team has been up to.

This is often a good opportunity for students to work individually or as a group to create social media campaigns on behalf of New Beginnings Peer Support.

Let us know if you wish to support our regular social media volunteer or have a bright idea for a campaign!

client to volunteer pathway

New Beginnings Peer Support offers long-term after-crisis support, providing differing ways in which clients can access our services. One of the routes of progression is our client to volunteer pathway giving the women we support the opportunity to gain skills and confidence within a working environment prior to seeking employment or as a means of changing career.

Volunteers using this pathway receive the same training as all our volunteers and are DBS checked. Training includes:

  • Trauma-informed Practice,

  • Safeguarding with specific and relevant examples,

  • Difficult Conversations,

  • Manual handling (where appropriate),

  • Practical use of First Aid (where appropriate)

  • Role specific skills e.g. social media strategy.

Clients who have benefitted from the Own My Life course are now supporting the delivery of the course to the new cohorts while others now support peer group meet ups, outreach stands or New Beginnings Peer Support Events and Fundraisers.

“As soon as I became a volunteer and met some of the wonderful ladies working there I felt really welcomed. I can see how much care and passion everyone has. There is never any pressure and I can help as much or as little as I like. It’s been cathartic for me in many ways and I feel I’ve taken my negative experience and turned it into something positive. I am always picking up new skills too as there are lots of opportunities for training.”

-PEER VOLUNTEER

POWER OF 10 volunteer project

New Beginnings Peer Support was fortunate to be a part of the Steering Committee for HADCA Power of 10 Project encouraging younger members of the community to volunteer.

It has been a truly collaborative partnership resulting in us developing roles for younger volunteers.

Our goal with positions open to students 16+ is to empower them and provide them with the necessary support to produce a tangible piece of work that directly supports our clients or raises awareness of the impact of domestic abuse within the wider community. Meaning they can witness the benefit of the work they produce and gain employability skills in the process.

Angela Jones - HADAC Information & Communications Officer with Jo Thackwray - Power of 10 Project Lead

Any students completing a volunteering role or work experience at New Beginnings Peer Support will be offered the Power of 10 Awards.

There are 4 tiers to the awards:

•    10 hours – Certificate & badge
•    20 hours  - Certificate & badge & certificate presentation folder
•    50 hours – Certificate & badge & branded POF10 t shirt
•    100 hours – Certificate & badge, gift voucher & personal statement workshop.

We thank those who have already given their time and commitment to New Beginnings Peer Support and look forward to welcoming future placements.
